away from home, we have so many more options the sooner you contact me. That means the first bad grade in the class, not after you are failing and can no longer withdraw. I can make referrals to so many services we have available. I may not know the answer, but together I am sure we can work through it.
Secondly, much of the anxiety that students' feel is not knowing what they want to do with their life. That is okay. Believe it or not, I was one of those people too. The better I get to know you, the more I may be able to help you gain insignt into what your strengths and weaknesses are. I don't advise students to go into legal studies. I advise them to go where their passion is. I provide information. I am a sounding board. Take advantage of it. Remember--no education is wasted.
So---how can you made the most of your scheduled advising appointments with me around those busy times when everyone is wanting to sign up for classes? This is how it typically goes.
Jane, how are your classes going this semester?
Great, I am going to graduate in the Spring. But I dropped one class because it conflicted with work. That won't effect graduation will it?
Well what are you going to take in the Spring, Jane?
I don't know.
How many credits have you taken?
I don't know.
You have electives left to take.
What electives do you want to take?
I don't know, what electives are they offering?
HAVE A PLAN. Look at my tips to the left to make the most of your advising appointments.

The first thing for you to know is that as your advisor I am more than your class scheduler. Yes, I do need to see you before you sign up for your classes, but more about that later. The biggest problem I have with students is not being contacted early enough. If you are having problems with classes or even other issues while you are here at Maryville and
Planning your Next Advising Appointment
1. Prepare ahead of time.
2. Have a current copy of your degree planning sheet filled out (you may get a blank off the website--your advisor has filled one out for you in the past DO NOT LOSE IT) or bring in a current copy of MAPP available on ACCESS Maryville.
3. Bring in your current schedule
4. Make sure all transfer transcripts have been sent to registrar. They have to go from registrar of previous school to Maryville registrar. Your advisor cannot put them in the system but a copy may help for planning purposes.
5. Look at the schedule of classes on Access Maryville before meeting. Make sure you check class time, location, conflicts, prerequisites, and whether there is space available. Does it fulfill your Core, Major, Minor or Electives?
6. For Legal Studies you can project what will most likely be offered in upcoming semester by looking at other pages in this website.
7. If Math is not your thing, do not save it for your last semester before graduation.
8. You will need to take more than 12 hours a semester to graduate in 4 years.
9. You must have a minimum of 128 credit hours, 60 hours at a four year university, your last thirty hours at Maryville, and half of your Major complete at Maryville. Those requirements are on line and on the degree planning sheets.
10. Faculty understand the need to work and go to school. It is hard and sometimes impossible to come up with a schedule that is all mornings but no 8am classes no Fridays, etc. Remember the more conditions you impose, the more you limit the quality of your education.
11. Come prepared to ask questions.
